Lessons From Nature: Poems for Boys & Girls

The Cackling Of A Hen

The hen, so soon as she an egg does lay,

Spreads the fame of her doing what she may

About the yard she cackling does go,

To tell all what work she now did do.

Just thus it is with some professing men,

If they do any good, just like our hen

They cackle of it wherever they go,

What their right hand does their left hand must know.

Lessons from Nature

Each poem is followed by a few questions for examination. This was the first poem that I opened up to when the book came home. This little poem had such an impression on me that I shall never again hear one of our gals carrying on without thinking of this message.
