Automatic Chicken Coop Door Review

Gone are the days… Do you remember those days of going out in the dark or rain or snow or cold, just to close up the chickens? The door needs to be closed every night to keep your feathered friends safe. That also means it needs to be opened again in the morning to let the ladies out to do chicken stuff. An automatic chicken coop door eliminates that part of chicken care!

So you may have seen my post about my new mobile chicken coop (so far I’m loving it!). As part of the coop, we installed an automatic chicken coop door.

An automatic chicken coop door is a game changer and worth its weight in gold! It is a durable, reliable system for chicken owners to keep predators out of the coop at night and protect your flock. It provides security and convenience.

To be upfront, Chickcozy sent me their automatic chicken coop door for free for my honest review. This is what you will get… what I like and what I don’t like. Now that we have the disclosure out of the way, lets get into the details.

Features of the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door

There are many features of the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door.

Opens Horizontally – Elevator Style

In most cases, the doors open upward. This may not work for all applications. As in the case of my mobile chicken coop. A door opening upward would hit the overhang of the roof. The split door, side to side opening, of the Chickcozy automatic chicken coop door fits perfectly on the end of the mobile chicken coop.

Different Power Options

The door has the options for the power supply. It comes with a removable cord or it can be battery-powered. It comes with a dc adapter so you can plug it in. It can also take 4 AA batteries in case it is not possible to plug it in. There is also a low battery alert so you know when to change the batteries before the door stops working.

Easy Installation

Installation is simple. Just screw the door onto the frame around the opening in your coop. Depending on where you are installing the door, it may takes some adjusting of an existing opening.

Adjustable Settings

There is a little screen on the control panel which makes it easy to see the settings. The settings are completely adjustable. There is an option to open and close at a particular time, at dawn and dusk, or up to an hour after each. It eliminates the need to go out at the crack of dawn open or at dark to close the coop door to keep your chickens safe for the night. It is also easy to manually open or close the door when needed. You just hold the button for 3 seconds to do so.

To change the settings, there is an up button, down button and a select button on the control box. Use the arrow buttons to flip through the different settings. To adjust the setting it is on, hold the select button then use the arrow buttons to flip through the options. When finished, hold the select button again.

There is a light sensor that controls how much light is present to open or close the door. This can also be adjusted. On this setting, it will give a number to represent the current lighting. You can then adjust the light level that will control the door. The adjustibility is nice, however, this is a bit difficult to adjusted precisely as you may want. It took me a couple of days to get the door opening just after sunrise. On cloudy or rainy days, it opens much later because the light level is lower.

Safety Setting

The door opens elevator style… complete with the anti-pinch feature. There is a bar on one side of the door that works like a button. If, when the door is closing, there is a chicken or something in the door way, this button will gently press and then signal the door to reopen. The door will then wait and try to close again. It will not squish the hens.

Pros and Cons the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Door

I have been using the Chickcozy automatic chicken coop door for a while now. It has been working great. I have it on batteries because it is on my mobile coop. The battery indicator has hardly moved. I have the door to open on sunrise and close at sunset. This lets my chickens outside earlier than I usually get out to the coop in the morning to open the door for them. I also have flexibility for when I go out to the coop to get eggs.

It is also nice to not have to go out later in the evening to close them up again. I can spend the evening with my family, friends, sewing, baking, reading or whatever else I might be doing. On rainy or snowy evenings, it is nice to not have to venture out just to secure the chickens in the coop.

If you go on vacation, opening and closing the coop is one less chore that the caretaker needs to do.

The door is made of plastic. Time will tell whether this matters or not. I have yet to try this in the cold of winter so I do not know how the plastic will fair through the extreme conditions our winters.

As stated earlier, on cloudy or rainy days, where it isn’t as bright out, the door opens later in the morning and earlier in the evening. This was only a problem one evening when one of my chickens waited later than usually to go in and the door had already closed. I adjusted the light settings so that wouldn’t happen again. It took me a couple of days of watching and adjusting the light settings. However, I have it where I like it now and don’t need to worry about it anymore.

Conclusion

If you are ready to upgrade your coop, this is a great feature to add that benefits both you and your chickens. The Chickcozy automatic chicken door can be found on Amazon or straight from Chickcozy.

This is actually the second automatic chicken coop door I have. The other one is on the stationary coop. I love that the chickcozy door opens horizontally so it fits perfectly on the movable coop. It offers flexibility in your schedule and, at the same time, security for your chickens.
