Gardens in June on Farmstead. Bee pollinating flower

Marauder

There has been a marauder in my modest pea patch this year who has successfully managed to thwart my aspirations of an abundant harvest.

Fortunately, this little thief is easily spotted due to his large size and propensity to be adorned in bright colors.

More often than not, he works alone.

But he has been know to work with a team. Greatly multiplying the devastation done to the plants.

This night, he’ll be working alone since his companions have sensed the danger that discovery poses.

Following his scent on the trail of destruction left in his wake,

I spot the brazen fellow… caught red-handed in the act of prematurely defiling my plants of their immature seed pods.

My presence has no effect on him whatsoever. He carries on with his shenanigans right under my nose!

You can imagine my horror at this point in the process! Were he ingesting them and receiving the nutrition found within that would be one thing! But to spit out the stolen goods is another matter entirely!! Where is this creatures mother? And why hasn’t she taught him any manners?? Let alone the eighth commandment?

Once collected from my horror, I realized that he had been satisfied with his days’ works of destruction and the flaunting of his dastardly deeds and left the scene of the crime.

But all has been forgiven.I’ve long since resigned myself to the loss of the crop. And I’ve decided that it was all worth it for the precious memory of the boy crossing the yard to where I was weeding strawberries a day or two after this event. Both chubby fists were clutching as many peas as they could possibly hold. He was grinning from ear to ear, bright blue eyes reflecting the sun, as he looked up at me and asked, “You hungwy Mommy? You hungwy?”He didn’t have to ruin all 50 or so feet of peas though did he? He could have left just a few for us to harvest.
